Success Stories

Over the coming months we’ll be listing the horses who we have rescued and re-homed with new carers.
As a new organisation, we don’t have any to put on here yet.... but we thought you may like to meet the horses who we rescued privately and who have provided the inspiration for “Going Home”. We fund these ourselves of course - so donations don't go towards their upkeep!

First came - Valli and Charlie....

Valli (born 2005, 15hh chestnut welsh cob gelding) was extremely nervous when he arrived here. His owners hadn’t understood that you can’t take an unhandled horse from wild to quietly hacking out in a couple of weeks, and were threatening to send him to Beeston market. We purchased Valli in May 2008, and Charlie, (a 20 something ex-racer) was loaded into the lorry to act as babysitter for the first few weeks so that Valli could settle in. Of course, we couldn’t part with old Charlie, so he stayed too.

Charlie (Faye’s Pet, born 1985, 16hh bay TB gelding) has had a hard life. He raced on and off between the ages of 2 – 12. He was found by a charity in a field in South Wales, aged 22, and he was very thin and weak. After a few months at a sanctuary he was fit enough to travel and he came to us. We’d decided that he deserved a final few months of tlc.... We gave Charlie 3 years of love and pampering but sadly, in July 2011, the time came to have him pts. He was our inspiration for Going Home and was a truly lovely old gent.

Then came Jake.....Jake AKA Thorneyside Hitman

Jake (Thorneyside Hitman. Born 2002, 15.3hh Section D gelding) was an emotional purchase after he’d failed his vetting at the sales. He was either going home in the meat wagon or with us – and I couldn’t let him go for meat. The vet thought he had cataracts and was likely to have impaired vision possibly leading to blindness, but we decided to take a chance as he had such a lovely personality. We were right – his eyes are fine. He is a bit confused and not 100% predictable under saddle, but he is our herd leader and we think the world of him.

Finally “little” Louis arrived.

Louis (Uly de l’Heute. Born 2008, 16.2hh French Comtois) is an example of why you shouldn’t look at horse rescue sites with your credit card in your hand. I purchased Louis from a site specialising in French rescues as he looked so lovely and he was due to go for meat the next day. As the clock ticked down, and no one else stepped in, I knew I had to save him. He arrived several weeks later – with lice, ringworm and a terribly snotty nose. He was unhandled and was running a temperature too..... and he looked something like a cross between a donkey and a highland cow.

image of Louis - ComtoisWe now adore “little” Louis, who is 16.3hh and only 3, he is so laid back and such a cute boy – it may have been an impulsive thing to do, but I am proud to have saved him and he is a great character. We intend to focus our efforts on saving horses from the UK – Louis was our token French rescue as we didn’t want him to end up on a dinner plate.
